The White Card is Hungary's residence permit for remote workers. The Immigration Office requires legal monthly income of at least EUR 3,000 net for at least 6 months before entry, kept up throughout the stay.
Who qualifies
You need a verified employment relationship with an employer outside Hungary, or a share in a company with verified profit outside Hungary, and you work from Hungary with advanced digital technology. You cannot have any gainful activity or company share in Hungary. Proof of income is a six-month bank statement or a certificate of regular income from the employer or the tax authority.
Length and extension
The permit is valid for up to 1 year and can be extended once for another year. Apply for the extension in Hungary through the Enter Hungary platform, no more than 90 and no less than 30 days before expiry. You must have stayed in Hungary on the permit for at least 90 days in any 180-day period before applying.
Family
Family members generally cannot receive a family reunification permit through a White Card holder. A child born in Hungary during the permit's validity can receive one after the birth is reported.
How to apply
- Apply at a Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission in your country of nationality or residence; no separate visa application is needed. Citizens of visa-free countries who are legally in Hungary without a residence permit can apply online through Enter Hungary or at the regional directorate.
- Prepare a certified employer statement or company proof, proof of income, proof of accommodation, proof of health insurance or ability to pay for care, proof of exit conditions (a valid passport and a ticket or funds) and one facial photo.
- Complete the application form, or the electronic form on Enter Hungary.
- Pay the fee and give your photo and fingerprints. For Enter Hungary applications this must be done within 15 days.
- Wait for the decision: the procedural period is 21 days and the decision is due within 30 days of submission.
- If you applied abroad, you receive a single-entry D visa valid for 3 months that allows entry for up to 30 days. Enter Hungary within 3 months of approval. The permit is mailed to your address.
