Japan's digital nomad status lets people from visa-exempt countries work remotely for up to six months. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for proof of annual income of JPY 10 million or more.

Allowed work

Holders may use information and communication technology to work for a foreign employer's overseas office, or provide services or sell goods to people abroad. Employment with an organisation or individual in Japan is not permitted.

Length and returning

The maximum stay is six months and it cannot be extended. A new stay is possible once six months have passed after leaving Japan. Holders do not fall under the mid- to long-term resident category, so no residence card is issued.

Insurance and family

Private insurance must cover medical treatment for injury or illness of JPY 10 million or more. Spouses and children can apply under the same status.

How to apply

  1. Check that your nationality is on the visa-exempt list for temporary visitors and that Japan has a tax convention with your country.
  2. Collect proof of annual income of JPY 10 million or more, such as a tax or income certificate, and an insurance policy that matches your stay.
  3. Apply directly at a Japanese embassy or consulate, because there is no one in Japan to act as an agent for a Certificate of Eligibility.
