The Nomad Residence Permit lets non-EU remote workers live in Malta for a year at a time. The Residency Malta Agency asks for a minimum gross yearly income of EUR 42,000; applicants who applied before 1 April 2024 keep the earlier EUR 32,400 requirement.

Who qualifies

  • You work remotely using telecommunications and are a third-country national.
  • You fit one of three categories: employed under a contract with a foreign employer, partner or shareholder in a foreign company, or freelancer or consultant with clients abroad.

Length and renewal

The permit is valid for one year from the issue of the residence card. It can be renewed three times, for a maximum stay of four years. To renew, show a bank statement with payment transactions carried out in Malta that proves at least five months of residence in the previous twelve, and apply two to three months before expiry. While the permit is valid you can travel in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Dependants and fees

Eligible dependants such as a spouse and certain children can be added, including at renewal. The fee is EUR 300 per person, paid by bank transfer, plus EUR 100 per person for the residency card, paid by card in person. The tax treatment is set in the Nomad Residence Permits (Income Tax) Rules, S.L. 123.210.

How to apply

  1. Confirm that you meet the remote work, nationality and work category conditions.
  2. Check your income against the EUR 42,000 gross yearly minimum.
  3. Prepare a valid travel document, health insurance covering the EU including Malta and the UK, a property rental or purchase agreement, a police conduct certificate and a background check.
  4. Read the FAQ and the application checklist of documents.
  5. Submit the application through the online portal.
